"Memphis

Memphis Belles – The Women Of Sun Records (6-CD)

Her 1968 Atco singleSure as Sin(Atco 6619) qualified her among collectors as a spectacular white soul singer. She was also a fixture on the Muscle Shoals scene, working overtime as a demo artist and session singer at the Fame Studios (that’s her, for example, behind Percy Sledge onWhen a Man Loves a Woman.)

Backup singers typically labor in anonymity, and Jeanie was no exception. Her credits include singing behind Elvis (Suspicious Minds),Willie Nelson, Cher, Neil Diamond, Jerry Lee Lewis, George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh, and countless others. She recorded under her own name, although that name changed over time, starting with Mary Johnson, who made some demos at Sun as a 13-year old girl whose parents drove her from Corinth MS to the Memphis Recording Service. She later recorded singles for RCA as Jeanie Johnson and Jeanie Fortune. She recorded a gospel/rock hybrid LP (Mary Called JeanieGreen) for Elektra, and for Atco as Jeanie Greene (she had married singer/producer Marlin Greene by then).

I knew Jeanie as a warm and caring friend with a sly sense of humor. She was full of wonderful stories if you could just hit the right buttons. Her later years were filled with health problems, made worse by poverty. She spent years in government housing in Corinth, the town of her birth. Her beautiful, soulful voice was all but gone by the time I met her in 2002, though her piano chops remained intact. I included her in an August 2002 NPR Scott Simon interview based on “Memphis Belles: The Women of Sun Records,” a box set I produced for Bear Family Records. Jeanie was more gracious than I when NPR cut her segment out of the broadcast because they found her speaking voice “too rough.” A lifetime of smoking, exacerbated by recent throat surgery, made it so.

Jeanie’s final session work was for Sun Records legend Carl Perkins in 1993. A collection of her own recordings (including countless demos for Fame Studios) and backup vocals on soul and country and R&R sessions would make a staggering body of work by a singer/musician whose talent contributed to the music business for nearly 40 years, while remaining nearly invisible.

— Hank Davis

When a Man Loves a Woman).
